Local youth moved one step closer to mindfulness last week.
That’s because the internationally acclaimed anti-violence and character-building program Mindfulness Without Borders put more than a dozen new mindfulness counselors through two-days of training at Rutgers Newark, as detailed in a Patch article on Friday. The counselors were trained in preparation for leading twelve-week Mindfulness Ambassador Council pilots that will commence early this fall and serve local youth in Newark and Irvington — as well as Maplewood and South Orange.
Mindfulness Without Borders is the brainchild of Theo Koffler, its founder and president. On Thursday, Koffler explained that the program teaches young people and their educators fundamental social and emotional skills to help them make positive decisions in stressful situations. Starting in 2007, the program has launched councils in Uganda, Rwanda, Toronto and San Francisco.
